Morning view out my window, the last day I ever woke up in Portland, Oregon.

abandoned things

I have always loved abandoned things: stuffed animals dropped on rainy sidewalks, empty shopping carts, eyeglasses, the muffin nobody buys at the cafe. This is not some saintly impulse, though. I love the pangs in my chest, the aches in my calves and joints, the tears. I love these abandoned things because they hurt me.

Hell, I even love the design of the acetaminophen caplets: candy-glossy in red, white, and blue. They cheer me up when I pop one (even though I have to feel like serious crap before I … Read more

no human faces

Saturday, I noticed Facebook friends (and friends of friends) changing their profile pictures to cartoon characters. Several posted a status update reading:  “Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite all your friends to do the same. Until next Monday there should be NO human faces on Facebook, but invasion of memories. … Read more

bicycle time machine

Muscle memory. Balancing the bicycle, straddling the seat, standing up to gain momentum on a hill, skidding to a stop, popping up the front wheel to clear the curb. Is it bone memory, too? Images forced out of metatarsals, patella, femur, phalanges. Water tower, recurring kidnap dream, man with green skin like the Incredible Hulk, dead … Read more
